Mine tend to come from a piece of conversation which then plants itself in the brain cell and sort of grows.Lynne Garnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05697330164705623835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3758609568631190155.post-63438373184147521102012-07-21T09:49:06.572+01:002012-07-21T09:49:06.572+01:00Thanks!Thanks!Lynne Garnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05697330164705623835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3758609568631190155.post-69076536747930439062012-07-21T09:47:45.794+01:002012-07-21T09:47:45.794+01:00I just love 'We're Going on Bear Hunt'...I just love 'We're Going on Bear Hunt' and often use it in the classes I teach.Lynne Garnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05697330164705623835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3758609568631190155.post-13785423483188773762012-07-20T14:15:05.040+01:002012-07-20T14:15:05.040+01:00I also find that preparing for workshops -and blog...I also find that preparing for workshops -and blog posts!- is a really useful way of reminding yourself about important aspects of picture books that it's easy to forget. I'm really looking forward to the preparation for my next workshop in October as I know it'll firm things up in my mind. As for cumulative or chain stories, I'd never given them a name either, but I love them and am also working on a couple at the moment. Thanks, Clare. PS As for my route into writing picture books, it came from massive lack of sleep when my eldest was a baby, and half-hallucinating strange ideas that I became convinced could become picture books...Juliet Clare Bellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06020801246132751659noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3758609568631190155.post-68533139802017653452012-07-19T21:36:53.563+01:002012-07-19T21:36:53.563+01:00It's interesting hearing how people got into w...It's interesting hearing how people got into writing picture books. For me, it was a combination of reading to my children and writing advertising/publicity in my job (i.e. writing short and getting to the heart of what matters). And I agree, your courses look great, Lynne.Paeony Lewishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13129555451791248798noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3758609568631190155.post-43462471265552774312012-07-19T11:10:17.332+01:002012-07-19T11:10:17.332+01:00I arrived at writing through a similar route. I came to writing completely the opposite way. I have no training and no background in literature so have never really analysed picture books the way your course does. I just started playing around with words and doing bits of painting and drawing and ended up writing. It then took many years of getting it wrong before I found a publisher. Even now I don't use a formula, I just play and draw till the pacing looks right and the words flow (and I still get it wrong a lot more than I get it right!) I think it would do me the world of good to do some proper analysis and to learn the basics of picture book writing. As soon as I get time I'm signing myself up! xAbie Longstaffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14682225221860351795noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3758609568631190155.post-35657925897602400782012-07-19T09:03:24.368+01:002012-07-19T09:03:24.368+01:00P.S: Was thinking that 'We're Going on a B...P.S: Was thinking that 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' is a good example of a chain story. Reads fantastically, whereas occasionally chain stories can get really dull to read about halfway through.Moira Butterfieldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17355420549929911500noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3758609568631190155.post-14550012302888454972012-07-19T08:52:04.046+01:002012-07-19T08:52:04.046+01:00Thanks, Lynnne. Nursery rhymes have a great deal to teach all picture book authors and poets, perhaps.Moira Butterfieldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17355420549929911500noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3758609568631190155.post-6120208475047987482012-07-19T05:52:46.568+01:002012-07-19T05:52:46.568+01:00This comment has been removed by the author.Vanihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01629544079087502422noreply@blogger.com
