In crayon, as a young child I plotted routes on my map of Milly Molly Mandy's village. Quite a few years later I was mesmerised by Tolkien's maps. For a contemporary picturebook map, my favourite is Beatrice Alemagna's map of Paris in 'A Lion in Paris'.
Another map I adore is by the artist, Kathy Prendergast, who created 'Lost'(1999) that I saw many years ago at the Tate Modern and it's a map of the USA that only includes places that incorporate the word 'Lost', such as Lost Creek, and it conjures up so many stories.
Ho hum, I've written drafts of picture books that incorporate maps, and after your inspiring blog post I feel I should dig them out and work on them again. Also, for making illustrations especially if you're going to see the same scene from different angles. I sometimes make a model of it - that can help too!Mini Greyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12089779125262631356noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3758609568631190155.post-70989719676829726272019-08-26T13:58:23.937+01:002019-08-26T13:58:23.937+01:00What an absolutely wonderful post to find here tod...What an absolutely wonderful post to find here today, when it is too hot to go anywhere but the maps in your head. I did this for my short story collections set on Moon Meadow Farm (the first book follows hedgehog and the second fox). It made it much easier to describe where they were, what they did in a certain place etc. It also ensured I didn't make a mistake and suddenly have the old oak tree on the other side of the farm.

I visited the London Library last week and fell in love with some of the creatures that lived in the seas of our world. they gave me a vague idea for a book but it's not quite formed yet.
