Lucy Rowland

Hello! My name is Lucy.  I'm new to Picture Book Den and I'm very excited to be joining the team.

I'm originally from Cheltenham but I now live in London where I work as a Children's Speech and Language Therapist for the NHS.

Words are wonderful aren't they?!...Whether they're spoken or written, whether they're in nursery rhymes, poetry, picture books or novels.  I wrote my first poem when I was 8 or 9.  We had to write about endangered animals and my 'Panda' poem was chosen to go in a local gallery exhibition. Unfortunately I did my own illustrations back then (and I can't draw at all!)  Fortunately, there is no surviving evidence of this.

I started writing picture books around 4 years ago and was lucky enough to find my agent, Anne Clark, of Anne Clark Literary Agency while I was backpacking in Indonesia.  There is a link to my author page on her website here.

Anne opened all sorts of exciting doors for me and when I finally landed in London, 6 months later, we signed my first two picture books with Bloomsbury. Gecko's Echo is illustrated by Natasha Rimmington and The Birthday Invitation is illustrated by Laura Hughes.

As you can see, I'm lucky to have been paired with some wonderful illustrators.  It's my favourite part of the whole process, seeing my text being brought to life!  Here are some pictures of my Macmillan books with the super-creative Mark Chambers.  These ones are a bit stinky though!  Scratch and Sniff stickers! Yuk!

I grew up listening to lots of poetry at home, from Tennyson to Dr Suess to A.A.Milne and I have to admit, it's usually the rhyme and rhythm that really drives me to write.  That said, I'm currently trying to develop my prose writing's very tricky though!

This year has been a big year for me as a writer, with my first 4 picture books out, so I have been learning all about doing author visits to book shops, schools, cafes and even festivals. It's been a bit of a learning curve but it's so much fun and I really enjoy getting out there and sharing my books with the children.

When I'm not daydreaming about story ideas or coming up with silly new rhythms and rhymes, I'm often daydreaming about my next travelling adventure!... And when I've had enough of daydreaming altogether then I enjoy baking, walks in the countryside, trips to the sea and spending time with my family and lovely friends.

One of those lovely friends is currently working on a website for me but in the meantime, if you would like to hear what I'm up to, please follow me on Twitter @lucymayrowland

Upcoming books:
Early next year my first picture book with the wonderful Ben Mantle is published with Macmillan- here's a sneaky peek of the cover!
