The Rather Perplexing Picture Book Quiz, by Malachy Doyle

I’ve been rootling through my picture book collection and come up with twenty seven questions to provoke and perplex you.  Some are easy; some are, hopefully, stinkers.  A prize for whoever gets the most right.  (The prize is me saying WELL DONE YOU!)

Put your answers in the comments section and I shall reply with how many are correct.  I won’t say which ones, or that’ll make it too easy for the people coming after.  But as the number rises, feel free to keep trying till we get as close to twenty seven as possible.  Have fun!

1.Who am I, and what are my two grannies called?

2. Name Fungus the Bogeyman’s wife and son.

3. Who did the Tiger come to have tea with?

4. Who's this handsome man?

  1. Granny Island and Granny mainland, Sophie, Asterix, red and white stripes, Obelix, Babar, Ian, Mickey, swapped for giant teddy, purple cat, bobo, mummy! Oh dear, only eleven, I thought I'd do better.

  2. WELL DONE YOU, LUCY! (as you are currently in the lead)
But I can only give you seven and two thirds, I'm afraid. I need three names for question one and there's only one Asterix character...
    I'm a hard taskmaster!

    1. Katie Morag! And I think thats Celeste - not Babar? Don't know the Asterix without checking, oh well. Great quiz!

    2. That gets you up to 9, Lucy. You're back in the lead!

    4. vitalstatistix, second place?

    5. It gets you to ten, Lucy - but Pauline's on 11 and Liz is on 10 and a half, so you're still in third, I'm afraid. Equal third, in fact, with Maeve.
Oooh, the thrill of it all.

    2. Streaking?? My word. I've never done that before :-)

  5. Don't feel bad if you don't know too many of these. My Liz only got four and a half - and she's spent nearly forty years with me and my books!

    1. four and a third!I'm proud of the third for naming a kitten who came into existence well before even I was born!

  6. WAY too difficult for me, Malachy. I'm useless at remembering character's names - I even forget my own sometimes. (Character's names that is, not mine.) The one thing I do know is that that isn't Obelix or Asterix (4), it's the head of the village. Whose name I have...forgottten! Maybe that will help someone else.

    1. You might be on to something there, Marie-Louise. I'll give you one point for effort.

  7. I'd have to look up 90% of the answers because I have an appalling memory. This is the first time I've seen Pookie - oh, he's so adorable! Your intriguing (and frustrating!) quiz is worth it for this alone.

  8. Some are familiar but I can't remember the names! yes, the asterix one is the head of the village, but my old asterix books are in my son's room and he is still asleep. . .
is the car in 23 'Gumdrop'?
God, I'm rubbish at this! ;-)

    1. And another one pointer... Actually half a point, as I want his formal name too. Oh, it's fun being strict!

  9. I reckon I got 13 but that is bad for me - I am getting rusty! Time was when I was buying books for libraries in Belfast I would have got nearly all of them.....back to work now!

    1. You'd be well in the lead, Liz. Go on - give us your answers...

    3. WELL DONE LIZ! You're in the lead with 10 and a half. Two wrong answers in there, and you need to be more specific on Gumdrop's formal name. Now get back to your writing, girl! (Oh I do love Annaghmakerrig. Haven't been there for years.)

  14. 12. Is " her friend" good enough (from the story where all the animals steal her fruit from the basket on her head)?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Ten right, Maeve. No, we need the name of Handa's friend, I'm afraid. But you're only one off the lead.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Shucks. Can I have a point though, even a pointlet, for knowing that Mervyn Peake wrote Captain Slaughterboard - but I haven´t read it?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Pointlet, then. But nobody else is getting one.

  17. Nearly there. The ones nobody's got yet are numbers 9, 14, 17, 18, 20, 25 and the harder part of 23. Does nobody know Yertle the Turtle by Dr. Seuss? Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell's A Little Bit of Winter? And that lovely Margaret Mahy book, A Summery Saturday Morning?

    1. a summery Saturday morning was always one of my favourites, I'll always remember seeing and hearing Margaret Many read it, wearing her signature hat and with huge enthusiasm, one of the very best!

  19. Don't let your dogs upset the geese!!!!! The only one I know for sure!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yes! That leaves only four and a half to go. Here are some clues:

14: One of the bestselling picture books of the past few years (in Britain, anyway).
17: A Little Bit of Winter, by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell.
    18: Orlando the Marmalade Cat's three kittens (B, P and T).
20: Get to the heart of the matter to find the author (but don't drop off trying to find the village).
23: Gumdrop's proper name. Liz was very nearly there with 'Vintage Austin car.'
